I once rescued a cat from the streets, and he had no clue what a litterbox was used for. Apparently sand/dirt is the closest thing to litter, and I guess their instincts kick in and use sand because they don't have access to a litterbox if they're homeless.

This makes sense, because he would pretty much go everywhere BUT the litterbox once I got him home. But, I learned from a friend that if you add sand or dirt along with litter in the litterbox for a week or two, the cat will start using it; and once he gets used to it, just stop putting sand/dirt in the litterbox and they'll be fully litter trained from then on
