Default Heads up!

Hello,
Hello all, been a while.
Conficker Worm
It also has different versions like Conficker B and others. There is information on it at the major news websites like CNN and others. Microsoft has the information at their site as well. I am including the link to Microsoft along with things that should be done for prevention and removal. April 1st is a date often targeted by the creators of malware and this year will be no exception. There are currently a lot of reports in the media about potential new virus threats and speculation about the potential impact of new viruses such as the Conficker worm. In particular, the Conficker worm takes advantage of a Windows which Microsoft fixed in late 2008. Users of Windows Vista or XP (SP2 and higher) should have had this update installed automatically.

After looking into this more, it seem quit a few AntiVirus/AntiSyyware Programs have takin note of this and easy your troubles, say they are on top of it, siuch as Avast, AVG, Norton Internet Security. But you never know about these issuse.

If you haven't received or know anything about this threat, than this might save you down the road.

If for any reason you cannot download the patch or the tool from these links I am providing to microsoft, let me know because I have already saved them to a file and I can e-mail them to one of the MODS here as an attachment, then they can send to you. Then you can install them that way. It is important for me to say that people think just because they download the tool, it runs itself. It does not. You have to manually run it when you feel it is needed. The tool is not to prevent the worm, it is to remove it. Knowing this is why I stress how important it is to save the tool to a folder or on your desktop so you can find it and use it if you need to.

This is not meant to alarm anyone. The new Cnficker Worm is a real threat. It is said to have been non active but they are expecting it to become active on or about April 1st. It is no Joke! It has already infected more computers than any virus/trojan/worm in history combined. It is said that most computers infected are from users that use P2P file sharing, games, and download video. It can be gotten from all other sources as well but those were the most common. When it has infected your computer, one of the removal tools comes from Microsoft Update. It is called the Malicious Software Removal Tool. Unfortunately one of the things that the Conficker Worm does is to disable Windows update so you can't get the tool or the patch. Here is the link to Microsoft so you can get the tool. You need to make a new folder in my documents and name it Conficker so you can save the tool. This way you can run it anytime you choose to. You can save it to your desktop if you like if that is easier. When you open up this tool it gives options to do a quick scan or a full scan. I suggest the full scan. Beware that the full scan can take a very long time depending on how many files you have and how strong (Fast) your computer is. If you don't have many files and your computer is fast, 1hr. If you have a lot of files and an average computer then it will probably take several hours.
Here are the actions that I recommend!
Turn on automatic windows update if it is not on.
Remember doing this is at your own risk. I haven’t had anybody with any problems after doing this that were major. The minor things that were caused by the tool removing the malicious software, virus/Trojan/worms were easily fixed. Most people have had no problem at all, still I must say this is at your own risk.

The first link I will list here is for Microsoft explaining about Conficker and the things that should be done.

This is the link for the removal tool.

These next few links are to the patches for the different Operating Systems that you might have. This is more to help prevent you from getting conficker.

XPsp3

Would like to know how to help you catwoman, but I'm not much of a pc tech when it comes to finding out different problems on the pc, unless I do a search for it.

I went to the Windows live update site and it told me I have no updates needed at this time.

I'm using a good anti-virus program, TrendMicro or PCcillin, that catches anything going into my cpu, and it asks me if I want to allow this program to continue.
I tell it NO if it is something I'm not downloading. I click on the Yes only if it is the software I am downloading.

So, I hope the worm hasn't got in through several downloads I've performed over the past few months. Keeping fingers crossed.

You are right, this thing is no joke.

Even though most of the "major" virus protection software's say they are on top of it, better safe than sorry.

Great Links!

Sorry, I had no idea that their would be question to this post. I'm sure I could help you get this corrected and updated. I will assume you are running a legal version of windows, are you?, doesn't matter to me, just need to know what I'm working with.

You may have a window .net framework issue, In this case we would update your framework first, or possible a driver is needed. It could be a few things simple as hardware issue, even some antivirus/antispyware programs have been known conflicts with the updates.

1.Well to keep this as simple as possible, what protection are you working with, if your not using any, or believe you may have a problem I would like you to download and run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.Good to clean computer before downloading new updates and programs..

http://www.malwarebytes.org/ use the free version. Or we can skip this if you are using a program. If needed, Just use the free version an no need to register, after you click free version it will take you to CNET to download, they are clean files, but make sure you download the correct one.

If you have Any problems or needs, Please post, I will look in this thread a couple time a day.

If you are ready to move on, It would be great if you Can you tell me exactly what the error message says?
Please Post.
Thanks.

Catwoman I sent you a pm,
I guess you fixed this issuse. I will look in a day or two to see if you POST.. if not and wanted to do it yourself:

It sounds like the automatic update services could be turned off. You would have to go to control panel and then performance and maintenance and then administrative tools then services and see if automatic updates is started and automatic. Without service pack 2 and depending on how you have the control panel set as to which view, you might have to get to services another way. Service pack 2 does not determine wheather you get the updates or not. Only certain updates require that you have service pack 2 installed before you can get them. Automatic updates has service pack 2 for you to install, you may like to try this also.

P.S.
Remember that the Conficker worm sometimes turns off windows update. You might need to run the Malitious software removal tool before you can get the update. But this would not be the first thing I would look at, allways a possibillity

OH MY GOD, I am sooooo Sorry! I didn't know you had posted in here, and i feel like such an ass now! I gave up on trying to fix this, until now, THANK YOU for trying to help me.

Lets see, where do i start. Ok, you wanted to know if i had a "legal" copy, yes, lol,...its legal, and my anti virus software is McAfee. I run windows xp home edition 2003. and i even tried by passing the service pack 2 and went straight to service pack 3 and got the same damn error. It lets me download the whole program, but then when it starts installing, it runs for a little bit then it stops and tells me it "can't write to data base" something like that anyway?

Thank you for trying to help, and again, i am sooo sorry i didn't see this, and thanks for the PM or i would never of knew you were trying to help me

Hello, I will try to help you, and PLEASE BE AS DETAIL AS POSIBLE, its a bit different when you are not in front of the computer, and it may take some time...

When Microsoft gives an error message, well?, they are like clues. I need that exact error message including the error code to be able to look it up. Sometimes the written message alone pertains to many different applications and sometimes so does the code. Never the less it is useful to look it up. Most of the time that message is caused by corrupted files, caused mainly by malware/trojans/worms and stuff like that. The new Conficker worm can cause this exact problem.

1. Back up all of your files that you might not want to loose. If you have enough or even the right corrupt files, removing threats can sometimes make the Operating System fail to boot back up, Im telling you this: so you clearly understand,

At this point I don't have a clue as to what your problem is. More information is needed.

2. catwoman, I need that exact error message including the error code, Please Post it.

3. Did you by chance download the Malitious Software Removal Tool and run a full system scan?.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

When most people goes to Microsoft, to find and download service packs, there is a link to the download details (most of them) that tells you what you need to do to download the service pack. Sometimes it tells you that you have to remove certain windows updates if they have already been installed before installing the one you want. Not many people read it, you are not the first to have this problem so don't feel bad.

Ok, thank you!. i am downloading that software tool now, and will do the full scan, then in order for me to give you the "exact" error message and code, i have to try and install sp2 again, i don't remember exactly what it said, so give me the day to get this part done, and i will post back with results!

I so much appreciate your help, its very kind of you to go out of your way to help and i owe you a drink, coffee, soda pop, anything you want! lol
