Default Double or Nothing at PokerStars

I'm a tried and true grinder. Limit - Full ring - one BB at a time. At least 90% of the time. I dabble in NL ring for low stakes and a SnG every now and then to break the monotony. For the most part, I grind.

I have a few PokerStars hats and shirts and sweatshirts and don't need any more books so I spent some of my VIP points on the Step SnG's to see how far I could go.

Hey! I'm a grinder! I did all right

Well while there, I found the double or nothing SNG's and not really knowing how they worked I sat at a $1 one and played it. Low and behold half the field got knocked out and I won!

Come to find out two things can happen - 5 people double up (Haven't seen that happen yet) or top 5 get paid. Beat 5 people! Even a grinder can do that!

I have . I played 8 of the $1 ones because I still think there has to be a catch somewhere but no. Finished "first" in all 8. Payout so far is double. $1 to get in - $2 win.

So now I am venturing into the $5 ones. So for 1 for 1. $5 gets me $10 for finishing in top 5.

No one pinch me - I like it.

Keep it up propiper.

It shouldn't take you too long, if you don't get too bold, to get to the higher paying tables.

I guess that's the best way to do it. Win a few $1 and move to $5,
and then if you can get a few of those under your belt, go for the higher buy-ins.

According to pokertracker I have an 80% ROI on the $1 ones (can't win them all) and 100% ROI in the $5 ones (You can win them all when you have only played 2 )

Most are played by people who don't know anything except WIN! So you can just play premium hands and get paid.

I have ran into a few that they all 10 realize what is happening and those drag on forever - everyone folding and only playing premium hands.

You can fix that by playing the turbos - Everyone gets a little antsy in those and you can sit and wait to get paid again

I have literally been checking this forum and posting when it goes "ding" tourney over - you win. ROFLMAO!

That's too much propiper, but a good thing.

Perhaps some day I will get bold enough to throw a little cash their way and give it a try.

But for now, I think I will stick to the free games and keep up with online poker skills.

these are what i used to turn my 10$ into about 100 on ipoker atm. not as fast to get the money up, but definately more reliable for someone on a small bankroll

Update:

Unbelievable! I tell you 8 out of 10 players at these thing don't realize that winning is not the objective. To be honest, doubling up isn't either - I have yet to see one end because half the field doubled.

Yet they still play fast and hard - Example: This is pretty typical - 6 players left (5 pay) 6th place sitting on less than 1000 chips (I play turbos) so blinds are 75/150 or higher.

That 6th place player will end up winning money at least half the time because they just will not stop playing at each other and blind him out. I have seen 100/200 blinds coming up for a player with 350 chips and that player end up in the money!

So anyway - started with <$2 in my account and figured on reloading when I run out. Playing nothing but these tournaments ($1 mostly/ 5 - $5 ones) and now sitting out $38

I figure I will $1 my way up to $50 - then $5 my way up to $100 then $10 my way somewhere

Will see I guess.

Step one complete:

Sitting at almost $56!! (One $5 in the bag!)

Now we are shooting for $100. I figure to set a stop loss at $35. So if I loose to $35 I will switch back to $1 and start over.

Im glad to hear you like these for bankroll building, they arent bad, Ive only played a couple at stars, but have been playing them at "CakePoker"
Im shure they are the same, I been playing the $25. +$2. top five recieve $50., the only thing I can say about these are be carefull and use posistion, alot of things can, an are going to happin if you continue to play these. besides players learning about you and players getting better. an even the loose player does a bit of damage to your overall count!

For players that never tryed them:
you must win 59 out of 100 games(Top five) to break totally even!,
after tourney fee's

The problem Im running into is when I fill the screen up I don't get to play the player as much an count on my cards more and it tends to cost in them OVERALL speaking, cause Im not focused on one table, in these games value betting at the wrong players will cost you quit a bit in the long run. bassically if you play verry tight and don't call a allin with big pairsJJ QQ and mid pairs you won't have a bunch of chip but you will gain a bankroll, Im not sayin you won't see some you wished you would of called but when you do have AA KK in these they seemed to get cracked a bit more say> you will lose 40% of your power hands and the profit margin is only dubble-up, you can't afford to lose 2 out of three.. so stay tight!, play late and enjoy it cause players will get better.

59 out of 100 huh, never did the math . My personal experience (your mileage will vary), is running about 80%. Now I am just venturing into the $5 ones and found they play no difference than there $1 counterparts. A little higher up like you are playing may be different.

That's for sure, even winning one then losing one is not profitable. (You loose the tournament fees.) Stay tight is the best advice.

I will have to find something else when this happens . You are dead on though. No one seems to understand that top 5 pays the same, everyone still trying to win. Give another example from the other night:

Playing tight as I can (probably too tight) and really card dead. Blinds are 200/400 and I am 6th out of 6th with 420T left. Player to my left BLUFFS a small blind all in and gets called by BB who has JJ. Leaves this player 150T but after antes I am next in BB and all in.

HE CALLS THE BUTTON WITH 150T!!!

If he folds he wins (58o is what he calls with)- We both went out at same time, I had more chips than him and finished 5th - he won NADA!

Eventually though people will get it and these things will last forever with everyone trying to fold till the end.
