Question Live Poker..any tips?

I qualified for a live tourney a while back and its coming up this month. I've been playing online for about year...as far as live play goes....I play the odd game with mates but have no real casino or live touney experience. So was hoping some of guys/gals would be able to offer any tips. Also can i use anything from online play in a live event..I know they're totally different but are there any common traits?

Thanks in advance

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply in live play since there are differences compared to online. One example is string betting (not making your entire action at once; e.g. pushing in enough chips to call before trying to raise). This is not allowed in live play. It's a non-factor online since no software lets you try it. Another is talking about a hand while it's in progress. Online, it's poor etiquette, but except for a few sites that turn off chat when someone is all in, you can do it. Live, you'll probably get a warning the first time, and if you continue, a penalty followed by being tossed out.

Sorry cant help you there as i have only played a few live games myself.

Just remember, keep ur cool and try not to give any big tells away, but you probably will if you are new to live play.

Good luck!!!

Hey Key.

For sure you'll be nervous, your hand will probably shake a little while making your bet. That happens to most of us, so don't feel bad if it does to you too.

Arj is right re talking about the ongoing hand. You can't, even if you're kidding, say you have AA, for example. That's against poker rules and you could/should get tossed out. Remember to not rush your play when you have a super good hand. I seem to do that all the time with internet poker. That will be a sure tell on your part, just take your time, try to LOOK calm!!

I wish you the best of luck in your tourney.

Dress comfortable relax don't let your tells get to the best of you and have fun Steve Dannenmen did it (he didn't wash his shirt either but that's besides the case) enjoy your tournement and good luck

each hand takes longer to play out live so you might want to take a look at the blind structure. since you won the seat on line I take it that you are in one of the big tourneys played over 2 or more days . stay focused and watch the other players even when your not in the hand!

One other thing I remembered that's probably good advice for those new to live play is wait until it's your turn before looking at your cards. This reduces the risk of giving off tells, and perhaps more importantly, encourages you to pay more attention to the other players' actions and patterns

Same goes for flop too - if your not first to act post flop don't bother looking at it - look at the other people to see if you can spot any tells.

One thing for you to watch for and not to do also..... a big mistake alot of amateur live players make and I've seen this SO many times is looking at their chips after hitting a flop... apparently it's subconcious because most people's first instinct when hitting something decent is 'how much should I bet' ... hence they look at their chips. Honestly... this happens so much with inexperience live players.

Read Mike Caro's book of tells

my favourite one is "Is one of my cards red"

If 3suited cards come down on the flop and your opponent has to look at their cards they very rarely have a flush and Id play as if their drawing for a flush if they continue playing the hand

Oh and if someone acts strong their weak
If someone acts weak their strong
