This may seem pretty obvious, but avoid playing big pots unless you have an appropriately powerful hand. Assuming you're not playing higher than NL 100 or 200, your opponents' poor plays will be a major source of your profit (for me, it's *the* major source). What you have to do is avoid giving too much back. Unlike tournaments where you quite often have to push for chips with good but not great hands, the onus to do so is far lower in cash games. In a tournament, your chip stack may get eaten away before you get another similar chance. In a ring game, with the small blinds that never increase, this doesn't happen.
