Default Stud 8/b strategy

In my new years plan - I've decided to play only the limit O 8/b and the limit Stud 8/b MTT:s at Stars - nothing else. And i can proudly say that I've made the money on every occasion - so I am doing something right. So for all you loyal members I will share some of my retarded insights here.

1. Early on - low blinds and antes

You know how every book says you should play the opposite style of the majority of your opponents? Exactamundo baby. Muck the A28o. Early on I only play the monsters - I do not chase anything. You will get the occasional free peek at 4 street when bringing in - cause early on there are always at least 5 people in the pot - and nobody completes.

It is also an imortant concept to remember - the lower the blinds in comparison to your stack - the less it pays off to gamble - the higher the blinds the more you must gamble.

2. Early on - never ever play a hand with high only potential. Do not - I repeat - do not enter the pot with two aces and raise. If you want to enter just call the bringin. Nobody folds - and at least two people will draw better than your initial pair.

The stuff you want to raise in these multiway pots are the monsters - A23 suited / unsuited - three low cards in succesion - or with one or two gaps...

Three to a flush can still be played for high but only cheap - and muck as soon as you catch bad.

ALWAY - ALWAYS make the high hands pay when you have a lock on low.

3. Be extremely patient - play a holdem sng at the same time or watch tv. Do not start chasing or playing gamble hands until the blinds are so high that almost every pot is heads up or you are so short stacked that your colon is bleeding.

4. Once heads up forget the 8/b part. Never draw to a low hand heads up - always go for high.

and I almost forgot:

5. Don't try and bluff. If you want to pull off outrageous bluffs - play NLHE. Bluffs very seldom pay off - mainly cause the cost of calling one more bet is often very small“compared to the size of the pot.

6. Trick play - the only one I use is where I know I have a lock on low on 6 and possibly on high too (say I've got a six high straight) - I will check it - making it look like I caught bad - to try and make both the low and the high hand to bet on 7.

7. If you are not certain you have a lock on low or the best high - don't bet on 7 - usually you get called by the better hand - check call - this saves you more than you loose in the long run. At least you never run the risk of getting re-raised and not knowing what to do.

8. Play more different games like Stud - stop being a NLHE nerd.

one last thing:

9. If you are going for low - and you cannot tell by the upcards of the other guy who is going low wether you have him beat or not....be vary. example scenario:

3 people left in the pot - one is obviously going high.

High - guy bets on 7
Other low guy raises

Don't be a sucker here - mostly this is not a bluff - the other low-guy knows something you don't - he has you beat. In the long run it pays off to muck here - even if once in maybe ten times it's a bluff or the low guy actually has a high hand.

I struggle with this - but it's pretty straight forward - just because it's limit doesn't mean you have to call like an idiot all the way to the river- Fold when you think you are beat - even if you made a decent low or high.

Enough yapping now - go play.

I'm interested in 7 stud h/l recently, and played serveral freerolls at absolute poker, usually I finished 40-80th place. The blind is too high when about 80 people left and I must gamble to chase the draw, and most time it didn't hit. Do you have any tips about the large blinds situation? thanks!

I hate being caught in the situation where the blinds are eating up my stack quickly. Usually in that spot I gamble more and throw fastballs when I have a pair or 3 to the low on 3rd street, or a pair and 4 to the low on 4th. You just have to keep betting and hope you make the draw. In my opinion there's not much more to do than that, I would love to hear another opinion on the subject though because that strategy is obviously a desparation move but then again you are in a desparate spot.

The best strategy is to try and build a stack early and let other people worry about being blinded out =o)

Good advices! I love to play this game!
The thing that ****es me off is when I get a flush and someone gets a full house and that happens some times...
Anyway I love this game and usually get some $
Unfortunately there are very few good tournaments...
