Default Stud hi/lo stategy

Are there any sites taht offer good stud hi/lo strategy. I was in a freeroll the other day and had a considerable amount of chips and was told I was a terrible player. They said the first rule is to "scoop" and i do the exact opposite. What doe sthis term mean and where can i get help?

I can't give you any strategy because I don't play it enough but I can tell you what they mean by scoop. To scoop a pot is take both the high and the low hands - this is the most profitable way of winning. I'm not sure what they meant by doing the exact opposite but I assume they mean you only played high hands but I don't know. Hands like A-2-3-4-5 are likely to win both the high and low. If you had a big chip count you can't of been doing too badly though - they were probably just ****ed off that you kept winning when you weren't sure exactly what you were doing!

the best way of playing is playing with a-2 and other high cards because if you get a low hand it will be the best and you also can win the high pot with str8 or big pairs ......also try to get a-2-3-4-5 thats the best"!

I know how crass this sounds, but I honestly believe that the best possible stud h/l strategy is not to play it.

If you want a hi/lo game practice omaha8.

I must say that 7 stud h/l is currently my game of choice. I have no idea about the strategy of the game. The hands I generally play are starting low...... 3 cards to my low that way I can try for at least half and if something else comes to go with what I have I think its just a bonus!
Might not be the best way to play it but it works out ok for me.

Get in there with 3 low cards, 3 flush, 3 broadway, big BURIED pairs and thats about it. This is a great game but you MUST pay attention to what cards are out. If you are some kind of drug user go play hold them with the rest of your drug buddies, this a sober game.

This is a good strategy - for Omaha 8/b. In stud 8/b you don't want high cards unless the game is shorthanded - then it plays basaically like stud high.

You always want to enter the pot with low cards only (suited babies, three to a straight - or gappers - stuff like A27 isn't all that great) - those are the only ones that have a chance at scooping both high and low. If you start out with high cards - you are only playing for half the pot from the getgo - and you might not even get that....

And don't get tempted by chasing with something like A2J - you'll need to catch 3 out of 4 low cards for low and at least two more good for high...

Papa is absolutely right A2-high card is generally a folding hand in stud 8. You really only want to play a high hand (at a full table) if the hand is extremely strong. Drawing on a speculative high is suicide and if that is the way you play, come play at my table.

Also, some people really flip out if you bet when the pot is an obvious split. They whine about the rake, and cry like babies. If you are worried about paying rake, go play a home game. I find betting into an obvious split pot is a good way to make money, you will be surprised how many times either

A) The other player folds or
B) YOu were wrong, the pot wasnt split nad you just scooped it and made a good value bet on the end to boot

If you want a primer on stud hi-lo, the best thing I have read is Todd Brunson's chapter in SuperSystem 2, although I hear Ray Zee's book is good for novices.

I don't tend to play this game often but when I do, I usually keep the lower starting hands, trying for at least half the pot.
