Default Bankroll Management for Omaha

I subscribe to the 300 BB principle for full ring limit holdem bankroll management: I must have 300 big bets to play a certain limit. For example, if I want to play 5/10, then I need a $3,000 bankroll.

I use the 25 buy-in rule for NL holdem. To play at a table with a $50 buy-in, I need $1,250. (Even though I normally buy in short-stacked.)

I don't know of any rules or guidelines for Omaha or O/8. Are there some?

I would be interested to know this also, I play a little PL Omaha Hi/Lo and use the 25 buy in rule to chose a limit.

I only use Omaha H/L as a break from Holdem though so would like to here from someone who plays all the time.

For regular PLO, I think it's safe to say you would need to double that figure. I play a lot of PLO, and you see quite a few pot bets, compared to large bets in NLH at the same stakes.

For omaha8, I would probably suggest about 1.5x your NLH BR....at least in this game, you have a shot at picking up at least half the pot from time to time to make up for it vs regular PLO.

I find the variance for omaha8 lower than standard no limit holdem. At omaha8 players make the mistake of chasing the low hand. That is an error in strategy so the bankroll will soon disappear anyway. Players should always have their eyes fixed on scooping the pot. First thing they should be concerned with in a 3 way pot is getting at least half, and that usually means the high hand. If they can lay claims to the low hand, thats a great start.

Its a myth that you should play a lot more hands at omaha8. Most of the time I am playing around the blinds and hoping for a cheap flop. You need to be just as selective with your preflop play in omaha8 as holdem. If you can get a cheap flop with a marginal hand, take it, but that applies to holdem too. The biggest pots come from the least expected hands so play the cheap hands and hope to land.

My reason for the varience being lower is because of the shared pots. If you cannot keep your bankroll with a 300+ cushion, your strategy is somewhat lacking.

Omaha Hi, is the same. You just need to be more selective. Sure people can outdraw you and take a chunk of your roll but this can happen in holdem too, 300BB's seem more than enough to keep you going.
