Default Check or bet the river?

$2/4 FRLH

Pre-flop: (7 players) Hero is UTG+1 with
UTG folds, Hero raises, 3 folds, SB calls, BB folds.

Flop: (5SB, 2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, SB calls.

Turn: (3.5BB, 2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, SB calls.

River: (5.5BB, 2 players)
SB checks

Hero

Do you bet at this river or check behind?

Keep in mind I'm definitely not a limit player, but I think it'd be smart to check behind. Being in the SB, it's very possible that he called your preflop raise with a 5, putting you on an ace the whole time and is looking to trap you. This is a little more possible due to the fact that he smooth calls on the turn. Best case scenario is that he has a weaker ace.

Either way, he played the hand good, and if he doesn't have the 5, he'll lose the minimum. If he has 5x/A6/A9/AK, then you lose the minimum. :smile:

Moral of the story: There's many better situations to get your money in.

I'd have to agree with beaston on the check. Been trapped many times with betting high pair, and done some trapping myself with catching the trips on the turn or river.
