Default Turn a set - then what?

2/4 Limit Hold'em (9 handed)

Preflop: Hero is Button with , .
6 folds, Hero raises, SB 3-bets, 1 fold, Hero caps, SB calls.

Flop: (9 SB) , , (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, SB calls.

Turn: (5.50 BB) (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, SB folds.

Final Pot: 6.50 BB

Should I have checked behind to try to get a bet on the river?

I doubt you would have gotten a call no matter how the hand was played. More than likely SB had AK...

But, maybe if you checked the flop, SB may have thought you were weak and took control of the hand on the turn..we will never know

You had an almost unbeatable monster hand and he called the flop, with a dangerous board. I would have checked the turn. If he checked back then he could hit something on the river and give you some action. I can't think of any card combo he could have called with on the turn aside from like AA, KK or 88.

I would have raised. If you are a habitual raiser, he will come to expect it. He might call, or reraise you to push you off, then you can show weakness on the river before check raising. If you simply check, he might just check too.
