Huckleberry Seed wins the 2009 National Heads-Up Poker Championship
Full Tilt Poker pro takes home $500,000 for his victory after defeating Vanessa Rousso in the final round
Dublin, Ireland (PRWEB) March 10, 2009 -- Full Tilt Poker pro and 1996 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion Huckleberry Seed has won the 2009 National Heads-Up Poker Championship, banking $500,000 for his victory.
Seed defeated Vanessa Rousso 2-0 in the best-of-three final round to win the title. Playing in front of a packed house in Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas, he took care of the always-dangerous Rousso with relative ease, slowly chipping up in both matches and then applying pressure when the blind levels got high.
Seed delivered the knockout blow in the final match when both players limped in pre-flop to see a flop of 8-3-K. Both players checked, and the turn brought a 10. Rousso bet half the pot, but was re-raised by Seed and forced to make a decision for her tournament life. She put the rest of her chips in the pot and showed J-10 for a pair of 10s. Seed flipped his cards over to reveal K-7, well ahead with a pair of Kings. The river brought a harmless 5 and sealed the victory for Seed.
Playing in the Diamonds Bracket, Seed faced stiff competition on his way to the championship, including fellow Full Tilt Poker pro David Oppenheim and Team Full Tilt's Gus Hansen. The semi-finals saw Seed battle Sam Farha in an epic match that lasted nearly two-and-a-half hours.
With this victory, Seed's record now stands at 18-4 in NHUPC match play, the best record in the history of the tournament. He was presented the Championship trophy by last year's winner, Team Full Tilt's Chris Ferguson, who held the previous best record mark of 16-4. Seed joins Ferguson and Phil Hellmuth as the only players to win both the National Heads-Up Championship and the World Series of Poker Main Event. He has now earned more than $4.5 million throughout his career. To learn more about Huck Seed, please visit fulltiltpoker.
